Both of these organizations point out that ingredients are listed by weight and animal protein should be in the top three ingredients. The animal protein should also be named such as “beef, chicken, lamb” etc.
Because whole meats can contain as much as 75% water an animal protein meal is essential. Animal protein meals are dried to about 10% moisture and should contain 65% protein. Things to look for and avoid include the following: added sweeteners, artificial preservatives, artificial colors
